Italy and Bioplastic

The bioplastic industry is by now a well-established business in the Italian economy.

It includes almost 150 companies generating total sales for 370 million €, located in 16 regions (even though Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Sicily house 60% of the total).

The main production industries are four: shopping bags, bags for organic waste, food-grade products and non-food sector plastic applications.

A particularly ground-breaking European regulation contributed to stimulate the bioplastic supply chain; introduced in 2011, it turned Italy into the European Union pilot country, so much that the Italian law was taken as inspiration for the directive approved by the European Parliament in 2014.

Thanks to the national law, Italy accomplished a 50% reduction in the number of shoppers over three years, moving down from 180,000 tons in 2010 to 90,000 tons in 2013.
